Review: Rango
Pin ItRango is a great example of how animated movies have developed over the last decade: the graphics are simply amazing. It’s a pity the same cannot be said of the plot. The film follows the story of oddball chameleon and accidental hero Rango (Johnny Depp) in his attempts to save a desert town from drought. It’s a bizarre mix of reptiles and vermin set against a Wild West backdrop, perfectly accompanied by Hans Zimmer’s score. But sadly even Rango’s star-studded cast (Ray Winstone, Bill Nighy, Isla Fisher) couldn’t save it from its incoherent and unrewarding storyline.
Despite a handful of entertaining characters, the slow start and anti-climactic conclusion really let the whole thing down. It has the potential to be a great film, but the elements just don’t come together. Give Rango a miss, unless you’re a graphics geek or you’re stuck with a bored eight-year-old and time to spare. It’s not a patch on Toy Story.
