There are a few highly anticipated films coming up this year including the final chapter of The Twilight Saga, Skyfall and Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit. However there are many films that look promising and that will make your cinema experience a little less predictable.
Quentin Tarantino writes and directs this film inspired by the classic spaghetti westerns of the 50s and 60s. Set in the Deep South (technically making it a ‘Southern’) Jamie Foxx (Ray, Miami Vice) stars as Django, a slave who is recruited as a bounty hunter by Dr King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) and sent to track down a brutal gang. The film also stars Russell Crowe, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kerry Washington.
The Untouchables, Once Upon a Time in America, and Public Enemies are great examples of great prohibition-era films and provide big shoes to fill for the films director Ruben Fleischer. So like the title suggests Gangster Squad is obviously full of gangsters, Tommy guns, corruption and a lot of violence. Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Nick Nolte and Emma Stone all star making the film even more appealing. This film seems to have all the right elements but I am hoping that it has the right execution.
Andrew Dominik’s second film The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford was an underrated masterpiece but hopefully Killing Them Softly won’t suffer the same fate as Dominik’s previous film did. Set in New Orleans, Brad Pitt stars as an enforcer called Jackie Cogan who is sent to track down the people that performed a heist during a poker game. As a gritty and authentic portrayal of Americas obsession with money Killing Me Softly looks like a solid crime drama with a great cast which includes Ray Liotta, Richard Jenkins and James Gandolfini.
It has been 12 years since Robert Zemeckis directed Castaway and as a fan of his films (Forrest Gump, Contact, Death Becomes Her) I am definitely excited. Flight is a drama about a pilot called William Whitaker (Denzel Washington) who miraculously lands a crashing plane only to be facing prison time when it is discovered that he had alcohol in his system. Like Forest Gump, Contact and Castaway, Zemeckis looks like he is returning to form with an emotional character driven films that tells an interesting story and tugs on the heartstrings.
The first thing that came to mind when I saw the trailer for this film is ‘WOW!’ because it all was familiar yet like nothing I have seen before. The films director and lead character is played by RZA (pronounced ‘riza’) who is a member of the New York Hip Hop group Wu Tang Clan. The story follows a Blacksmith in China who forges a nifty set of metal glove thingies which he uses to protect a village from the bad guys. Besides looking really cool there are a number of reasons to be excited for this film; Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu star, it is a Wuxia meets Spaghetti Western, and it has an amazing soundtrack with artists like The Black Keys and Kanye West involved.
