A little over a decade ago telephony was just picking up a phone and dialing a number on a dial plate. Nowadays, however, there are various ways of making phone calls. Classic land-line telephones, mobile phones, smartphones and phoning via the internet – all this is possible. The various ways of making telephone calls all have different advantages so that one can figure out what suits one’s needs best.

Landline telephones

Landline phones are best suited for families since they are not connected to an individual’s account. Rather, they serve as connections to a group of people. Though they do not have the various special features that mobile phones and smartphones offer, they are very handy. Modern phones don’t use cords anymore and allow their users to walk freely in their homes while phoning. Furthermore, making phone calls to other landlines is usually very cheap. Therefore they are a great addition to mobile phones. Recent developments like the Internet based voip phone even allow their users to make use of VoIP telephony.

Mobile phones

Everyone owns a mobile phone nowadays and the reasons are simple: availability at any time and any place as well as certain special features like mp3-player, integrated camera and internet access. Also, the costs for phone calls have become cheaper and cheaper in the last couple of years.

Smartphones

Smartphones are the latest products when it comes to telephony and they have been a huge success from the beginning on. Smartphones are basically much more than just a phone but rather very small computers. They allow their users to perform many different tasks such as browsing the web, using applications, taking high-quality pictures, quickly connecting to social networks and listening to mp3s.

Internet-based telephony

Making phone calls via the internet has also become more and more popular. The main reason is that these calls are absolutely free. These services often include chat programs and video telephony, meaning that one can see one’s conversational partner while speaking to him or her.
