What do you get when you mix laid-back Californian soul with absurdist comedy and bone-dry London wit? Will Franken, of course.
Originally hailing from Sedalia, Missouri – the middle of nowhere to you and me – Franken’s comedy blends physical comedy with caricature vignettes, a bit of audience interaction on the side and a whole lot of character voices. Phew.
The self-confessed Anglophile made his Edinburgh debut last year with Things We Did Before Reality, a delicious mix of his work prior to 2012. This year Edinburgh’s Pleasance Ten Dome will be treated to Concert to Benefit the Victims of My Father for a considerable run. Franken’s impressive bag of caricatures and part-rehearsed part-spontaneous comedy has drawn acclaim from reviewers and fans on both sides of the Atlantic – a considerable achievement, considering how different American and British humour can be.
…scathing satire and knowing humour that underlies Franken’s work…
Even reading the biography on his website gives you an idea of the scathing satire and knowing humour that underlies Franken’s work. Judging from his previous side-splitting and drily cut humour, I can only anticipate with excitement what he will bring to this year’s Fringe. Go forth and laugh, y’all.
