Rachel and Nicole are the organisers of the Fashion Film Festival in St. Martin’s Courtyard. The event screens three fashion related films to coincide with London Fashion Week; Zoolander, Grey Gardens and The September Issue were chosen for this year’s festival. Rachel and Nicole talk to Mouth about putting on the festival and what else is planned for St. Martin’s Courtyard.
ML: How did the partnership with Silent Cinema come about?
RF & NL: For the Olympics in 2012 St. Martin’s Courtyard hosted an international film festival, and Silent Cinema were the natural partner to co-host the event. St. Martin’s Courtyard is the ideal location for an outdoor screening but it is a residential area so the fact that Silent Cinema is silent worked perfectly. This is the second year that we’re partnering with Silent Cinema and we’ve extended the event by an additional night as it was so popular last year. The theme is a Fashion Film Festival as the screenings take place during London Fashion Week.
ML: The event is by ballot rather than ticketed – why did you choose to issue tickets in this way?
RF & NL: Since the event is free, we thought that the best way for everyone to have a fair chance to get tickets would be to use the ballot method.
ML: There are only 100 tickets per night – I imagine the demand’s been huge?
RF & NL: Yes, the event has been very popular! There are 120 tickets per night, but there are also walk-in tickets on the day, Twitter and Facebook giveaways, and tables can be reserved at Suda Thai, Bill’s or Dalla Terra for an al-fresco dinner and a movie.
ML: Can you reveal which pop-ups we can expect at the event?
RF & NL: There will be free popcorn, a sweets stall by Bill’s, a street food cart by Suda Thai, and Dalla Terra will be serving Italian antipasti and wines.
ML: St. Martin’s Courtyard seems to always have events on – how has a seemingly simple courtyard off Long Acre become such a destination for these events?
RF & NL: St. Martin’s Courtyard is beautiful place and its open-air landscaped courtyard is a great venue for events. The courtyard also has a good selection of retailers and restaurants.
ML: What has been your favourite event so far and why?
RF & NL: The Silent Cinema screenings are always well-received and great fun. St. Martin’s Courtyard hosts two shopping nights each year, in spring and at Christmas, and this summer we had a Food and Flowers Festival to promote the fantastic restaurant offering and our unique concept The Covent Garden Academy of Flowers.
ML: Are there any future events in the pipeline that you can tell us about?
RF & NL: The Christmas shopping night will take place on Thursday 5 December, there will be 20% discount at over 100 shops, bars and restaurants and lots of in-store parties, live music and other activities.
