London is awash with theatre and musicals, so it takes something special to stand out in the crowd. Lucky for us Londoners that Once the musical has just opened at the Phoenix Theatre.

Based on a 2006 indie movie and winner of eight Tony awards, Once beats it’s competitors by simply being simple in design and style. The musical is staged in a single setting, with characters never leaving the stage, they just sit at the sides and become chorus. The cast are also the in-house band, playing an assortment of musical instruments and this helps to build a electric atmosphere that pulls the audience into the action.

The songs and action feel more personal than larger than life productions, and the theme revolves around missed opportunities – something everyone is more than used to.

With such a diverse choice of theatre in offer it is sometimes hard to pick a gem, but honestly give Once a go. It’s an experience you will not forget.
