There are many aspects of university life that are appealing. Firstly you can study your favourite subject and go into the profession you have dreamt of for years. However, many regard this as a chore at university and concentrate on finding themselves through drinking; parting and being all round awesome.

In my uni halls a staple of every week was our weekly poker tournament. It was here that arguments, theories and other stupid bets were brought to the table. And if you lost then you were in the wrong. The cards were the decider. For a group of eight alcoholic aggressive males it was the perfect way to clash egos without actually having to put your fist through someone’s head.

Being students and poor, we only played for money when we had company over. By the 3month of playing poker everyone in the flat knew the tells of their fellows, which meant we had to bring in new blood to win big. This of course didn’t mean that being lucky or having a laugh was thrown out the window, but it did make it hard to lie to people who you were with almost 24/7.

…this game is all about outwitting your opponents mind…

I haven’t played poker since university and it’s because I have fond memories of the game. Some of my uni mates went on to play for real in casinos and gained/lost their share amount. With any game there is a risk of failure, but poker is about outwitting your opponent. Psyching them out and finding their weakness. It could be called a battle of wits, and true poker players combine the personality and cockiness of their hand to win overall.

If you’re interested or would like to see how it’s done then check out these worthwhile videos of the PCA 2013 Super High Roller live Poker Star. As I have mentioned this game is all about outwitting your opponents mind, and these guys know exactly how to do it. The feature table line-up is stellar: Tom Dwan, Antonio Esfandiari, ElkY, Dan Shak, Steve O’Dwyer, Vivek Rajkumar and JC Alvarado.

Poker can be a lot of fun, but remember that not everyone plays nice. So if you want to have fun just wait for the perfect hand. It takes a while, but you’ll get it, and then my friend, you will wipe the floor with them.
