A remake of True Grit was inevitably going to surface sooner or later, but fortunately it is the Coen brothers who have taken the reigns and re-worked a classic into a modern masterpiece. Their Wild West story is one of an unforgiving, yet beautiful landscape which is populated by hardened gunmen such as Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges), a conniving U.S. Marshall who agrees to assist teenager Mattie Ross in avenging her father’s murder.

Jeff Bridges proves his worth once again, complemented by fine performances from the likes of Matt Damon and Barry Pepper and a well-balanced combination of biting humour and shocking violence. True Grit can comfortably sit beside Unforgiven as a great contemporary western.
