On 4 October we were waiting with banners and party poppers for the announcement of the iPhone 5 at the “Let’s Talk iPhone” event. Well we are still waiting, because we didn’t get the iPhone 5. We got somewhat of a hybrid, but it’s a very good hybrid. So have Apple over-promised and under-delivered?

It is said to be the best iPhone to date. While lacking in redesign of the exterior, it’s what is packed beneath the beautiful thin glass and stainless steel that matters. Apple’s dual-core A5 chip (yep the same dual-core chip that powers the iPad 2) gives it a blazing fast performance; its all new camera, a full 1080p HD resolution video recording; and SiriTM, an intelligent assistant who you can ask for help or dictate your commands to. The iPhone 4S also comes with iOS5, the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, with over 200 new features and iCloud. The new iOS5 features include built-in Twitter integration and iMessage. Salivating yet?

…the best iPhone ever…

Apple says it’s the best iPhone ever and it is not hard to see why. The iPhone 4S has a camera that makes it one of the fastest on any phone and the new features in the Camera and Photos apps give you instant access from the lock screen, you can also record video in full 1080p resolution.

The introduction of Siri, the intelligent assistant that helps you get things done just by asking, could be a novelty that may wear off. Personally, I don’t like chatting on my smartphone when I’m on the train much and I can’t think I would look that smart commanding my robotic PA to call my mother. As much as this seems all a bit Holly-Red-Dwarf-esque, voice control may be a step forward in the smartphone era, but then so is facial recognition as per the Ice Cream Sandwich on the Galaxy Nexus. Is Siri a reason to get the iPhone 4S? Not really. But everything else this phone has certainly could be.

To get or not to get? If you are due an upgrade and you have the iPhone 3GS – do it; if you have the iPhone 4, wait a little while longer for, I don’t know, say the iPhone5? If you’ve never had a bite of the Apple – what are you waiting for?! This is just the smartest phone to entice you into the world’s most expensively branded fruit.

Great read! I agree, maybe Apple have over promised but the iPhone 4S is by no means an under-delivery! Don’t underestimate the power of Siri. When you’re work commute is an average 4hr round trip drive and you need to send a text, make a call, or even find a petrol station on route, Siri smoothly does all this for you without the touch of a button!!

Definitely a great tasting bite of the Apple!!

I agree you wouldn’t get your smart phone out on a train to ask it to task something for you to do maybe in the privacy of your own home but certainly not in the public domain. If you have never had an iPhone then getting this would be a step up & you wont be disappointed its a powerful smart phone that packs a whole host of interesting features & has enough apps to keep you interested.
