Movies based on characters and stories from comic books are becoming ever more popular in Hollywood – which is currently releasing roughly three of these films every year. The biggest company of all in this area is Marvel, with the majority of the films released based on its characters.

It was influenced by the Occupy Wall Street movement and made a domestic gross of $448 million – hitting $1.085 billion grosses worldwide.
The most recent movie in the Iron Man franchise, which stars Robert Downey Jr as the superhero and Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, proved the most successful yet. The plot for this third instalment sees billionaire Tony Stark forced to go on the run after his home is destroyed by the terrorist Mandarin – played by Guy Pearce. The film went on to make $409 million in America alone, even earning himself a dedicated slot game, with an opening weekend domestic gross of more than $174 million.
Avengers: Age of Ultron – $1.405 billion
The Avengers movies are the ones that bring a whole bunch of Marvel heroes – including Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Iron Man, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) together. In this second effort they were up against Ultron that has gone haywire and audiences flocked to see it – to the tune of $459 million domestically and $9.46 million overseas.
The Avengers – $1.519 billion
The first Avengers film stunned audiences by bringing together all of their favourite Superheroes in one movie for the first time – and also saw them face off against an excellent villain in Tom Hiddlestone’s Loki. Thor’s brother gains control of the Tesseract energy cube and plans to use it to enslave the earth, with audiences around the globe flocking to see the Avengers try to stop him. The film made over $623 million at the US box office and $1.519 billion in total.
