Serial killers are absolutely fascinating. Not only do they become the centre of the media when they commit their heinous crimes, but they have countless books, television shows and films made about their exploits. There are many serial killers dotted throughout history from the famous Jack the Ripper, Jeffrey Dahmer and Ted Bundy to name but a few, but if we go back even further who would have thought that a prime candidate for starting the fad off would be a French Knight!
The infamous Gilles de Rais (a French nobleman) is considered to be the precursor to the modern serial killer. He fought alongside Joan of Arc in her army and was considered to be a great warrior.
However he had a slight dark side.
This unfortunately hinders the evidence to how many children he murdered…
After sexually divulging himself with the children, torturing them with swords, bathing in their blood and finally beheading them so that he could place his victims heads on pikes outside their homes, he would make his servants burn and bury the remains. This unfortunately hinders the evidence to how many children he murdered. Officially records state the number to be within 80-200 victims, however some believe it could be as high as 600.
He was ultimately caught by the church and condemned to hanging in 1440, but as far as records go he could well be the original serial killer, the one who did it all before the rest!. So as you tuck yourself into bed tonight remember these facts:
The USA has 76% of the worlds serial killers.
