Last week, a video began to circulate the Internet so quickly and with such ferocity that it’s unlikely you haven’t seen or heard of it. In the short clip, a young woman performs oral sex on twenty-four men in a bar in Magaluf in an attempt to win a free drink.

Although we are all aware that holidaying with friends in party locations such as Magaluf often comes with its fair share of sleazy, summer debauchery, the clip quickly instigated shock and disgust from the Internet community, and rightly so.

With the young woman revealed to be an eighteen year old, Northern Irish girl, many who saw the clip were quick to comment, calling her disgusting, shameful and immoral in countless comments, Tweets and posts. Since the video was uploaded, it has been revealed that the young girl was performing the sex acts in an attempt to win what she believed was a free ‘holiday’, only to discover that the ‘holiday’ referred to a cocktail worth €3.

…disgusting, shameful and immoral…

Magaluf Night OutRegardless of this young woman’s intentions, her motive, or her decision at the time, the notion that her indiscretion is paraded over the internet, strewn crudely across the front page of newspapers and talked about on every news outlet is the ultimate in slut shaming.

The idea that images such as these should be mocked and used as a kind of sick entertainment enters the dark depths of our human psyche. Should we harshly judge the young woman who made a poor decision, or should we instead turn to the bar employees who encouraged her, or what about the twenty-four young men who eagerly pulled down their trousers? Where were her friends? Why did no one stop this from happening?

…what about the twenty-four young men who eagerly pulled down their trousers?…

The incident brought ‘mamading’ into the public eye and into our collective vocabulary. Mamading refers to games in which women are encouraged to perform sex acts on multiple men in bars or clubs in order to win prizes, namely free booze. The practice of encouraging very drunk women to partake in such activities is completely degrading, humiliating, sexist and absolutely wrong on every level.

This young woman will undoubtedly face further weeks of humiliation and embarrassment over that fateful clip, but what has this incident of mamading and slut shaming taught us? It has certainly highlighted the subject of consent, and how in this case it was so obviously lacking. Did this young woman give her consent to this incident being filmed and circulated on the Internet for millions of people to pass judgement on? Potentially risking the wrath of an angry and disappointed family, impacting on job prospects and negatively affecting future relationships? I think that’s probably a huge no.

…completely degrading, humiliating, sexist and absolutely wrong on every level…

The fact that we, as the scandal hungry public, have then consumed this unconsented material shows what kind of a culture we truly reside in. With The Sun’s incredibly poor, attempt to conceal the identity of the eighteen-year-old girl, we welcome yet another victim to the world of slut shaming. Although time will soon render this story old news, the young woman will still have to live with the fact that her story swept the UK like the horrible, degrading slime that it is.
