During the Oscars ceremony, host Ellen Degeneres posted a ‘selfie’ containing herself, Jennifer Lawrence, Jared Leto, Channing Tatum, Brad and Angelina, Bradley Cooper, Meryl Streep, Kevin Spacey, Lupita Nyong’o and Lupita’s brother. The picture has now been retweeted (as of 9.07am March 5th) an astounding 3,232,765 times. When the picture was first uploaded, Twitter was so overwhelmed with users, the site had to issue an apology after twenty minutes of disrupted service. With the picture making the Tweet the most retweeted in Twitter history – we take a look back at some other famous Tweets that have experienced their own Twitter fame.

The iconic Tweet from the President of the United States, ‘Four more years.’ was retweeted nearly 800,000 times. Complete with photo of Barack and Michelle in a tight embrace, the President’s Tweet was shared around the world after he was re-elected as 44th President of the United States. Obama has used social media throughout his Presidential career and during his initial campaigns, making him extremely popular with young voters.

Unknowingly live Tweeting the top secret raid on Osama Bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Sohab Athar found himself in the middle of a media storm. The IT consultant from Pakistan had no idea what was going on when he also Tweeted, ‘A huge window shaking bang here in Abbottabad Cantt. I hope it’s not the start of something nasty :-S’.
