When I was at university for the first two years I lived with seven other guys. One of these guys was a recreational user of marijuana and to my knowledge smoked every day, as much as he could. I have no problem with drug users as it’s their life and they can do what they want. However, living opposite him meant that I inhaled the fumes nightly and became quite a connoisseur on good or bad weed. I also had night terrors, but that is another story.
Now cannabis is a fascinating plant and gets a bad rap for how wonderful it can be for medicinal purposes. Cannabis is still in the gaze of researchers as the classy little plant contains something called cannabinoids. No it’s not an enemy from a Nintendo game, but a specific group of compounds that can only be found in Cannabis. These 80 compounds are so extraordinary because they are only found in the plant, and have amazing properties that can further medical research.
So why is there so much hate for this wonder plant? Out of all of the cannabinoids there are two that are the most prominent: cannabidiol (CBD) and Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Now the THC is found to be higher in quantity than CBD and is the reason that everyone likes to smoke a bit of weed. THC is the reason that you get high by creating a psychoactive effect. In fact it stimulates the right side of the brain to release dopamine, which in turn gives off a sense of euphoria. This relaxation is absolutely fine, however if the consumption of THC is regularly used there is a chance you could become addicted or suffer memory loss. A different flatmate of mine enjoyed smoking weed also, but when exams came around he was determined to work on his essays and get them in on time. Once he had finished his dissertation (with a day to spare, which we all thought was amazing for him) he celebrated with a lot of weed. When he woke up he had no idea he had slept past the deadline by almost 48 hours. It still makes me chuckle thinking about him, thinking we had played a prank on him. He didn’t get very good grades.
…it’s believed that CBD oil may be effective as an anti-cancer medicine…
So there are ups and downs to THC, but CBD is quite simply amazing. The reason that researchers are so interested in the compound is that it could be used in the fight against certain illnesses. Even though we have moved so far in medicine in the last twenty years, there are still some things we can’t cure. It has been proved that CBD can relieve things such as chronic pain, inflammation, migraines, arthritis, spasms and epilepsy and schizophrenia. On top of this it’s believed that CBD oil may be effective as an anti-cancer medicine. The tests are still going ahead, but as cancer is the biggest killer worldwide, cannabis is looking pretty good.
So if you are defending/attacking cannabis definitely use a little knowledge on THC and CBD. It helps to know both sides of the story, and in my experience my flat mates used cannabis as a way to escape the worries of university. But if you’re not a big smoker/eater of cannabis then there are other ways to get that all-important CBD.
