Have a quick flick through your average beauty magazine and it soon becomes apparent that one of the key make-up trends for SS12 is The Natural Look. However, what might surprise you is how much make-up, apparently, is needed in order to pull this look off. According to sofeminine.co.uk, you will need:

  • Concealer
  • Primer
  • Foundation
  • Blusher
  • Mascara
  • Translucent lipstick

… Not so natural after all, then. Indeed, using so many products on one’s face on a daily basis can lead to dry cheeks, an oily T-zone and blemishes, which means that one’s actual natural skin is compromised; and so begins a vicious cycle of using more and more makeup to cover up the damage caused by a bid to carry off The Natural Look.

Here at Mouth London, we’ve researched a range of natural remedies that will allow you to pull of The Natural Look without resorting to a list of beauty products as long as your arm. Each treatment will remove impurities and add lustre to your skin, without the use of nasty chemicals.

The quick fix

When you’re on the go, try applying a light dab of tea tree oil to your skin. With its antiseptic properties and ability to tone the skin, it reduces blemishes and allows you to wear your natural face with confidence. If you suffer from acne, try applying a more copious amount on your face overnight and watch it work wonders within a week or so!

Spa day

If you have a little more time on your hands, why not try an all-natural facemask? Many Eastern cultures prepare a mixture consisting of a tablespoon of gram flour, two tablespoons of plain yoghurt and a squeeze of lemon juice. This mixture should last up to one-and-a-half weeks, so save time by making a batch and then popping the remainder in the fridge.

Alternatively, soak three tablespoons of lentils for a few hours, then drain and blend the lentils until a smooth, paste-like consistency is achieved. Add a teaspoon of turmeric powder (known for its ability to illuminate the skin’s appearance), and apply a thick layer onto your face, avoiding the eye area. Leave to dry for 20 minutes and then wash off with warm water.

Go green

Of course, sometimes we all need a little make-up in order to feel confident and ready to face the world. Une, available in Superdrug and Boots, is a make-up brand that combines organic ingredients with affordable prices. Une says “no” to genetically modified organisms, artificial colourants and synthetic fragrances, so it’s good for your skin, and with their mineral foundation priced at just £9.99, it’s good for your wallet, too!

So, next time you’re tempted to go mad on the slap-on in order to pull off The Natural Look, think about the damage you’re doing your skin, and go natural the natural way!
