Since signing a 3 year deal at Tottenham Hotspur in early July, André Villas-Boas is yet to make a large impact on the team’s performance in the Premier League. After a positive start to the league Spurs have lost 3 of their last 4 matches, putting questions into the minds of fans. Is Villas-Boas cut out for the job?
Similarly at Chelsea, Boas had a strong start in the league, but ultimately lost his job due to a drop out of the Champions League spots. Can Spurs fan’s expect the same? Boas’ 88% win record at Porto shows that he is definitely capable at top the top level, Spurs’ aim of a top 4 finish is easily achievable if Boas is given time. Narrowly losing to last years champions Manchester City in a 2-1 defeat shows promise. But what do the fans think?
After Spurs lost 1-0 to Wigan Athletic a few weeks ago, the fans asked questions of the manager after a decision to substitute Defoe in the 57th minute. Defoe was replaced rather than his poor support upfront for Adebayor and the home fans reacted angrily with disbelief as their only player who looked capable of scoring a goal left the pitch. After the players and manager were booed off at the end of the game, Tottenham keeper Brad Friedel put the loss down to a bad day and blamed himself and fellow team mates for the loss, taking some pressure off of Boas’ back. But what next for AVB?
Since the Wigan defeat Spurs have looked strong, and will need to be strong in a London derby this Saturday away at Arsenal, who are also fighting for a Champions League spot. I feel that the fans should back AVB, as fixtures leading up to Christmas will test the team. The Europa League brings added pressure to Boas, not getting out of the group stage could be fatal for his career at White Hart Lane.
