Football teams are global brands; cults that are followed by millions in every walk of life. Often, as the ball trickles out for a throw in, our attention turns towards a certain supporter relaxing in the private box. These are the famous faces that add that extra bit of glamour to their team. If you know your football but are stifled by showbiz, here’s a comprehensive list of the biggest celebrity football fans to put you on your way.

Manchester City

Although City will soon doubtlessly enjoy an influx of celebrity supporters after the takeover of Sheikh Mansour (who counts as a famous supporter himself), their most high profile fans remain the Gallagher brothers. Top of the league and top of the charts, Noel and Liam are fully dedicated to their team (even if they are no longer talking to each other).

The Gunners can boast many a famous face at the Emirates – allegedly including the Queen! Though, if there were an award for these kinds of things, it might go to Nick Hornby, who wrote the book Fever Pitch, which is based on his experiences as an Arsenal supporter.

Among the host of celebrities that support Liverpool, acting is a field with real affiliation to the club. Although notable celebrity Kopites include Caroline Wozniacki, Sven Goran Eriksson, Rio Ferdinand (can you believe it) and Theo Walcott, it is the likes of Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Samuel L. Jackson and Clive Owen that steal the limelight for supporting the Merseyside club.

Manchester United

Perhaps amassing the biggest following in the world, United have undoubtedly attracted one or two celebrity backers. Snooker legend, John Virgo is a fan, while recording artist Drake is rumoured to harbour a Manchester United logo on his heart (such rumours will be hard to physically prove, of course). Closer to home, Brian Blessed can be found donning Red Devil’s shirts.

Chelsea are well backed in the celebrity department. Former England rugby captain, Lawrence Dallaglio, is a keen CFC fan, and he is accompanied by fellow sportsmen, Sebastian Coe and Sir Steve Redgrave. Richard Attenborough is also a fan, as are legendary actor, Michael Caine, and DJ, Paul Oakenfold.
