Sporting couples represent what us normal people would love to be: rich, young and able to play sports on a regular occasion without complaining about our knees or backs. We secretly like to think that we’re not interested in what they do but like any public relationship, they never leave our gaze.

But that’s not the most interesting thing about them. When two highly successful sporting people are in a relationship, we like to try and figure out who has the upper hand in the relationship…

5. Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall

Zara Phillips, winner of Gold at the World Equestrian Games, is probably more recognized than her partner Mike Tindall, winner of the Rugby World Cup in 2003. We have no idea of the couple’s net worth but we’re thinking Philips must be worth a few bob with her royal ties. With Tindall’s alleged behaviour over in New Zealand we’re thinking he came home to a not too pleased Phillips

4.Rory Mcllroy and Caroline Wozniacki

It started with some ‘twitterings’ over Twitter (well for the public it did), and then it firmly came to our attention when Wozniacki competed at the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament in July with Mcllroy in attendance. With Mcllroy on the up in the golfing sphere and Wozniacki competing at the highest level in tennis, they’re both on the rise with Mcllroy earning $14 million and Wozniacki coming in with $12 million. Expect them to be the next ‘big’ sporting couple.

Breadwinner: Mcllroy …just.

3. Maria Sharapova and Sasha Vujacic

You’ve probably never heard of Sasha Vujacic unless you watch basketball in the US. Vujacic won the NBA title in 2009 with the LA Lakers but he’s overshadowed by his tall, leggy partner, the Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova. They were engaged in October of last year and we’re sure that Vujacic bought her a decent ring; after all he’s worth $10 million. Sharapova in contrast? A whopping $90 million. She could have bought matching rings for him and herself several dozen times.

Biggest piggy bank: Sharapova

2. Shoaib Malik and Sania Mirza

We’re venturing over into uncharted territory by covering a less well-known couple (at least in the West). Malik and Mirza’s relationship is an odd one with Malik marrying the tennis player Mirza only for a unknown woman to allege that she was the wife of Malik and that the wedding could not go ahead (Malik’s previous “marriage” was apparently conducted on the phone!). While Malik’s net worth is not available Mirza is estimated to be in the region of $2 million.

1. Iker Casillas and Sara Carbonero

Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas can look rather scruffy at times but managed to land sports presenter Sara Carbonero. We know we’re cheating a little by including a TV presenter but in terms of sporting couples in Europe these two certainly make some noise in their homeland. It doesn’t hurt that Casillas earns an estimated $6 million a year in wages and has insured his hands for $7.5 million but loses in the stakes of stunning looks.
