Perfect for Dinner, Drinks, or a Date

Whether you work, live or play in the City it can be difficult to find somewhere for a nice evening drink or meal, but with the Clerkenwell opening of Bistro Du Vin, part of the Du Vin Hotel line which has 14 beautiful UK hotels, the search just got a bit easier.

To start, the decor is comfortable French chic with a “By the Glass” wine dispenser which makes possible a lengthy and affordable by the glass wine selection and an open plan kitchen displaying a Josper Grill.

…the walnuts were brilliantly roasted to remove any bitterness…

The service was helpful and we were quickly brought our drinks and starters. The drinks were fantastic and included one made especially on my taste preferences. The menu has an assortment of goodies to choose from including crab on toast, seasonal asparagus and salads. We went with the foie gras and chicken liver parfait served with thinly sliced toast and grape and raisin chutney. The rich parfait portion was massive, perfect for sharing, and the chutney’s acidity and texture slightly offset the thickness of the foie gras.

We also split a beet and goats cheese salad with caramelized onion and roasted walnuts, common for many restaurants lately, but this was uncommonly superb. The onions were sweet, the smooth cheese was broken up nicely throughout the salad, the walnuts were brilliantly roasted to remove any bitterness and the dressing, a light drizzle of balsamic reduction, was fantastic.

…basically it was burger plate happiness.

Service continued to be attentive as the mains were brought. Again faced with an abundance of choice we chose to split the burger and the bone-in Galloway Sirloin. The burger was a generous layering of toasted bun, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, and a bacon and cheese topped patty, which mixes three meat cuts including brisket to add a smoky, sweet richness not found in other burger patties. It was a big burger, much to big to fit in my mouth, so I knife and forked my way through it and loved every bite.

The fries were thin cut, crispy and hot. Basically it was burger plate happiness. The steak was a bit over cooked, more medium than the requested medium rare, but it was still tender and juicy and the Josper Grill gave it a smoky aroma.

…I woke up the next day thinking about this lovely bit of heaven.

We skipped the cheese platter and went for profiteroles filled with rich vanilla ice cream and smothered in decadent chocolate sauce and the Black Forest, a large portion of brownie chunks topped with black cherries, a scoop of both chocolate and cookies and cream ice creams, whipped cream, and pistachio shavings. It was so good. I woke up the next day thinking about this lovely bit of heaven.

Bistro Du Vin is a great addition to the City scene. The service was friendly and helpful, but not annoying. The food is locally sourced quality ingredients cooked to perfection by a team who clearly know what they are doing. The ambiance was pleasant, the bar beautiful, and the food great. Perfect for drinks with the boys or a date with your sweetie.
