A recent rendezvous with friends at Foundation Bar introduced me to London’s underground cocktail scene.

Just a short walk from Covent Garden’s tube station, Foundation Bar is hidden beneath the city’s cobbled streets. As we teetered down the steep steps into the basement, it felt like we were about to embark on a secret, exclusive and glamorous evening. It was therefore appropriate to order a drink named after Audrey Hepburn’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s character, Holly Golightly, which was extravagantly complimented by a diamond shaped ice cube and an edible flower.

We absorbed the atmosphere of contemporary-cool mixed with traditional garden party.

Enjoy your drinks in the glow of the fairy lights

Although sceptical about starting the night at 18:30, in order to take optimum advantage of the half price drinks deal which ends at 20:00, every seat was taken and there was an endless stream of people surrounding the bar as cocktail shakers were thrown into the air.

Having reserved a Birthday Booth we huddled around a table which sprouted a tree bejewelled with fairy lights, admiring the beautifully decorated, complimentary cupcakes and marvelling at the alcoholic cocktails served in teapots or jam jars and accompanied by a selection of party rings. We absorbed the atmosphere of contemporary-cool mixed with traditional garden party. The attention to detail, such as homely living room lamps scattered along bare brick walls, is what gives the bar its quirky edge.

Whether it is an early evening drink and snack or a late night soiree…

As the evening progressed and the dance floor opened, we were given the option of testing out our latest moves. Unfortunately, the bar’s location next to Pineapple Dance Studios gave us the disillusioned perception that we could move like Louie Spence. However, for those who had not quite reached the dancing stage of the evening, the bar remained the perfect area to stay curled up in egg shaped chairs to rest feet and chat.

Foundation Bar is the perfect escape forLondon’s youth. Whether it is an early evening drink and snack or a late night soiree, I could happily while away hours sampling the many lavish cocktails on offer.
