The summer holidays are finally here and traditionally it is the time when families pack their bags for an overseas adventure.
But instead of going to an overcrowded beach resort somewhere in Southern Europe, choosing a road trip in the UK might be a great alternative. With quaint villages, popular seaside resorts and scenic mountain roads, the UK offers a variety of scenic drives.
London to Brighton
When driving out of London, one of the easiest and most popular road trips is the drive to Brighton. The fast 90km drive can be completed in one or two hours. This makes the charming seaside town of Brighton an excellent destination for day or weekend trips. This medium-sized coastal town makes for the perfect escape when seeking refuge from the buzzing city life of London. The day can be spent visiting the Royal Pavilion, the Brighton Pier and the city’s museum and art gallery. On sunny summer days the beach attracts countless visitors, providing a great way to relax and cool down. The scenic drive through the green countryside of southern England adds to the charm of such a daytrip.
…start exploring the natural beauty of the peninsula…
From Brighton, one may decide to drive westwards along the sunny southern coast until finally reaching the rustic and mystic Cornwall peninsula. Along the way are idyllic coastal areas and seaside towns, as well as the lively cities of Portsmouth and Southampton. By starting early in the day, the city of Plymouth on the edge of the Cornwall peninsula can be reached within one day, even when taking some of the smaller coastal roads from time to time. Plymouth is a great base to start exploring the natural beauty of the peninsula. From here you can continue to the charming fishing village of Polperro and Bodmin before reaching St. Austell, Cornwall’s most populous town with just over 30,000 inhabitants. This is a good place to take a rest before driving through the green countryside to the coastal town of St. Ives and reaching the end of the peninsula when driving further south-west.
On the whole, combining Brighton, the southern Coast and the famed Cornwall peninsula makes for a great road trip that can take anywhere from three to four days – to over a week. Like many city dwellers, if you don’t happen to own a car and van rentals like Sixt are a good way to go. Not only does a road trip provide the kind of freedom unlike other forms of transportation but for couples or families, renting a vehicle is a convenience as there is the opportunity to travel on your own terms without the rush making it great holiday adventure.
